This groundbreaking, interactive event celebrates the resilience and diversity of First countries languages in BC facing change. Discover just what First Nations communities throughout the province do to greatly help their languages survive and flourish, inside beautifully created convention space, featuring original very first countries artwork and interactive stations.

Language is a strong, powerful marker of identification and tradition. Look at the psychological resonance associated with term “mother tongue” – the languages we develop with are our kin, nourishment, and birthright. BC is one of the planet’s many linguistically diverse areas. From a global perspective, it’s known as a linguistic “hotspot” due to the diversity plus vitality of First Nations languages in BC, of which 34 are spoken here.

Through interactive programs, initial very first countries artwork, video clip, sound and real time wedding, Our Living Languages provides site visitors with all the opportunity to find out more about the annals of disrupted languages in BC, the complexity of these languages, therefore the men and women – and entire communities – which can be working tirelessly to report and rejuvenate all of them.

Walk-through the colourful “language forest” and hear a greeting in another of the 34 very first countries languages. Duck into a relaxing little cocoon, woven like a cradle, and hear tales and lullabies. Marvel on three masterpieces of modern very first Nations artwork, each interpreting “language” through yet another lens.

Visitors to the exhibition will come to a new realization towards need for language variety while the renewed future for First countries languages. Our Living Languages is located from the Royal BC Museum’s Third Floor, at the entrance into the very first Peoples Gallery.

In 2015, the Royal BC Museum won the United states Alliance of Museums quality in Exhibition competitors for Our lifestyle Languages. The convention had been one of only four entries – from 37 submitted by a few of the world’s state-of-the-art and progressive galleries – for this yearly award.
